The Value of Oil Analysis

OIL ANALYSIS 1

Analyzing the oil in your vehicle is like sending your blood to the lab for tests. An engine oil analysis can provide clues about the health of your engine – without any invasive surgery.

By analyzing a sample of used engine oil, you can determine the amount of contamination, the wear rates and overall condition of your engine. The real benefit of an oil analysis is that it acts as an early warning system, alerting you to potential problems before they become an equipment failure.

And oil analysis isn’t for just one kind of driver or one kind of vehicle. The tests benefit all engines, from passenger cars to fleet vehicles to agricultural, construction, and industrial equipment.

How to Perform an Analysis

First, you’ll need to purchase an oil analysis kit. Jackson Oil & Solvents have kits which contain everything you need for analysis.

You’ll then extract a small sample of used engine oil from your vehicle and mail this to the lab for testing.

OIL ANALYSIS 2

Interpreting Your Results

All Jackson Oil & Solvents kits are sent to Polaris Laboratories in Indianapolis for analysis.

Technicians will check for elemental metals, including the presence of metals and other elements, such as aluminum, chromium, iron, copper, lead, calcium and more. Knowing the levels of these materials can help you identify wear patterns in a specific part of the engine. High amounts of wear metal usually indicate an abnormal wear or corrosion problem.

Technicians will also check for insoluble matter like carbon, fuel and dirt. The insoluble test measures how fast the oil is oxidizing and receiving contaminants, and how effectively the system’s oil filtration is functioning.

OIL ANALYSIS 3

Analysis will measure the oil’s viscosity, its alkalinity or acid level and if the proper level of detergents and anti-wear additives are presents. If your oil falls out of the range it’s supposed to be, the oil could have been overheated or contaminated.

The report will detail the results of these tests and provide an overall condition of the sample, ranging from normal to severe. If you’ve used Polaris Laboratories before, the report will include any changes from earlier analysis.

How Analysis Can Save You Money

The benefits of oil analysis go beyond preventative maintenance.

If you’re considering buying a new or used passenger car, commercial vehicle, or construction equipment an oil analysis can help identify any issues lurking under that washed and waxed hood. You might want to reconsider your purchase if a lab report shows high levels of metal in the oil.

For fleet managers, oil analysis can help minimize downtown, as well as safely extend drain intervals, meaning less money spent on oil, filters and labor.

Make the Most of Your Results

Oil analysis shouldn’t be a one-and-done item on your maintenance checklist. Although a single sample is useful in providing a snapshot evaluation, especially where a component problem is suspected, used oil analysis is best used when results can be compared to many samples taken over a period of time. For all your oil analysis needs or questions, contact Larry Davis at larry.davis@jos.us.com or 317-502-5289.

Chevron Debuts ISOCLEAN® Certified Lubricants and Services, the Industry’s First National Program Focused on Controlling Particle Contamination

Particle contamination is the number one cause of lubricant related failure in equipment.

SAN RAMON, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Chevron Products Company, a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. division, today announced the launch of its ISOCLEAN Program, a first of its kind national program that offers a solution to particle contamination through products and in-plant services designed to assist customers in maximizing the life of their equipment by meeting stringent quality control standards set by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Chevron’s ISOCLEAN program includes ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricants, which have been certified to meet the fluid ISO Cleanliness requirements of OEMs, and ISOCLEAN Services, which are in-plant services designed to clean up and manage contamination of in-service lubricants and operating systems. Both offerings are dependent on each other and help to reduce wear, decrease unscheduled downtime and extend the life of equipment.

Chevron’s ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricants meet a specific ISO Cleanliness code at the point of delivery, which represents the most stringent cleanliness standards and specifications for lubricants placed in equipment that are required by several leading OEMs. An important first step in controlling lubricant contamination is starting with a certified lubricant. These products help reduce the expense and manpower required by end customers to pre-filter non-certified lubricants to meet OEM requirements.

ISOCLEAN Services are performed by a national certified network of service providers at the plant location. Controlling particle contamination for in-service equipment is another critical element in maintaining efficient operation. The portfolio of services performed may include:

  • Fluid purification and dehydration
  • Varnish removal and mitigation
  • High velocity flushing
  • Reservoir and tank cleaning
  • Condition monitoring and system audits
  • Fluid handling consultation

Chevron began rolling out its ISOCLEAN program in early 2015 and has developed a national network of ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricant Marketers. The program has seen such dramatic success that it will begin to expand internationally in 2016. The company’s goal is to significantly increase the number of certified marketers throughout many regions.

“No other company is as dedicated to providing solutions for lubricant particle contamination as Chevron,” said Doug Hinzie, VP Americas Lubricants at Chevron. “Our ISOCLEAN Program with certified lubricants and services is proof that we are investing heavily in this crucial industry need. In response to the request for a turnkey solution from customers and OEMs, we developed this comprehensive national program because we know how important it is to provide a consistent solution which is certified and backed by Chevron, and delivered wherever our customers need it.”

The number one cause of lubricant-related failures in equipment is contaminant particles – most of which are so small that they are unable to be seen by the naked eye. Controlling fluid contamination early in the process can significantly reduce the costs to remove it later, which is a direct saving that goes to the bottom line of our customers.

“It doesn’t matter if you are in mining, construction or own a fleet of trash trucks, it is all about lubricants and high pressure lubricants – the cleaner that oil is the longer it is going to last, because downtime is a killer,” said Freddie Dodge, expert miner and star of “Gold Rush” on the Discovery Channel. “You get peace of mind with ISOCLEAN lubricant system because every gallon you use you get a certificate that it is free of harmful contaminants.”

Chevron offers more than 50 ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricants for critical equipment components from hydraulics to gear oils to synthetics for a variety of industries: agriculture, construction, manufacturing, mining, petrochemical refining, power generation, and waste hauling. ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricants give customers the opportunity to significantly maximize equipment component life: by 2 to 4 times in most cases.

These lubricants have undergone one of the most rigorous testing processes in the industry to verify that the lubricants performance is not compromised, which is exclusively done at the Chevron Research and Technology Center. All products delivered by ISOCLEAN Certified Lubricant Marketers meet the required certification process, which includes multiple tests, and follows stringent delivery processes to verify that the products meet specification on each delivery.

The interactive truck was a great way to showcase premium Delo engine oils, lubricants, and coolants. The truck started an open dialog between the customers and their salesman. After the customers were done touring the truck, the salesman took them through our other 6 booths. The booths were Fuel Polishing, Racing, DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), Equipment/FuelMaster, Polaris – oil/lubricant analysis, and Palmer Trucks.

The Fuel Polishing/Filtering booth was led by Mike Klepfer, our fuel filtering guru! He was able to not only talk about the benefits of being on a fuel filtering program, but he was able to show the benefits. He took the customers through the truck and explained how the fuel is transferred from the tank and filtered through from start to finish.

The Racing booth was led by the race master herself, Diane Poff. She explained our racing program and our race sponsorship (find out more here: http://jacksonoilsolvents.com/services/24-hour-race-station/). Also, she was able to showcase our full line of VP Racing Products and our 24-hour Race Station.

The DEF booth was led by Keith Huff, the creator of DEF-Depot. Keith went through the importance of being pure to the tank by showing the customers how we are able to keep the product pure. To watch a short video on DEF visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvU-uE_h7HM. To learn more about DEF-Depot visit: www.def-depot.com.

The equipment booth was led by 3 talented equipment and FuelMaster specialists: Jodie Brill, Randy Collier, and Rob Horton.   FuelMaster is an automated fuel management system that can be customized to a customer’s needs; such as smartcard (memory chip card), PROKEE® (memory chip key), credit card reader, keypad only, fleet card, AIM2 passive fueling (radio frequency device inside the vehicle with RFID Tags), mobile fueling for tanker trucks, car wash activation and gate openers just to name a few.

The Fluid Analysis booth was held down by Christine from Polaris Laboratories. She explained an effectively executed fluid analysis program eliminates the guesswork, risk and reactionary nature of your maintenance department. By learning to trust the power of the data, you can save millions of dollars by catching and monitoring problems before they become catastrophes, making unplanned downtime a thing of the past and even reducing the frequency of your current fluid changes.

The final booth we had was Palmer Trucks and the ever so talented salesman John Cummings manned this booth. He also brought a Kenworth tractor to show that in all Kenworth tractors, they are serviced with Chevron Delo XLE 400 10W30. For more information on Palmer Trucks visit: www.palmertrucks.com

Everyone that went to each booth and had their punch cards completed was eligible to be entered into Jackson Oil & Solvents grand prize drawing. The grand prize was a Green Egg Grill and the lucky winner was Mike Chapman from Milestone!
